Introduction
Volcanic Drama
Meets Wild Africa
Tsavo West National Park is the more varied, more dramatic and more geologically extraordinary of Kenya's two Tsavo parks. At 9,065 km², it encompasses a staggering range of habitats — from the ancient lava flows of the Shetani Lava Field and the forested Chyulu Hills, to the crystal-clear waters of Mzima Springs, the open plains of Ngulia and the escarpment walls that drop to the Tsavo River valley below.
The Chyulu Hills — a range of young volcanic cones rising to 2,188 metres above the park's western boundary — are among the youngest mountains in the world, less than 500 years old in geological terms. Their underground streams supply Mzima Springs, where half a billion litres of crystal-clear water bubble up from the lava each day, creating one of Africa's most remarkable natural phenomena. From a balloon, the contrast between the jet-black lava fields, the emerald Chyulu Hills and the red-brown Tsavo plains is a landscape of almost surreal geological beauty.

What Makes
Tsavo West Unmissable
Mzima Springs
Half a billion litres of crystal-clear water surface here daily from underground lava aquifers fed by the Chyulu Hills. An underwater observatory allows guests to watch hippos and crocodiles from below the surface — one of Africa's most extraordinary wildlife experiences.
Shetani Lava Field
A vast field of jet-black lava erupted approximately 200 years ago — so recently that local Wakamba communities still have oral traditions about the eruption. The Shetani (Swahili for "devil") lava field is an alien, spectacular landscape, dramatic from both ground and air.
The Chyulu Hills
Geologically among the world's youngest mountains — these beautiful, forested volcanic cones on the park's western boundary are visible from across southern Kenya. A dramatic, green backdrop to the Tsavo plains and a superb hiking destination adjacent to the park.
Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary
The Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary within Tsavo West is one of Kenya's most successful black rhino protection programmes, holding some of the most closely monitored rhino in East Africa within a fenced 70 km² area.
Migratory Bird Ringing
The Ngulia Lodge forest is famous for one of Africa's most significant migratory bird ringing operations — up to a million Palaearctic migrants are recorded passing through each November, including species rarely seen elsewhere in East Africa.
Diverse Scenery
Nowhere in Kenya packs more landscape variety into a single park — volcanic hills, lava plains, crystal springs, the Tsavo River, open savannah, forested escarpments and the distant profile of Kilimanjaro on clear mornings.
The Balloon Experience
Tsavo West
From the Air
A Tsavo West balloon flight delivers one of the most visually dramatic experiences in the East African balloon safari portfolio. As the balloon lifts at dawn, the geological story of the landscape unfolds beneath you — the jet-black sweep of the Shetani lava field beside the red-brown Tsavo plains, the crystal-clear pools of Mzima Springs glinting in the first light, and the green volcanic cones of the Chyulu Hills rising to the west.
On clear mornings, Kilimanjaro is visible on the southern horizon — its snow-capped summit above the clouds — creating a scene that combines geological extremes in a single view available nowhere else on earth. Wildlife below includes elephant herds, lion prides on the lava field margins, and the extraordinary concentration of species that the Tsavo River corridor supports year-round. After approximately 60 minutes, a champagne toast and Out of Africa breakfast await on the Tsavo plains.

What to See
& Do
Mzima Springs
Mzima Springs is one of Kenya's most extraordinary natural phenomena. Half a billion litres of perfectly clear water surface daily from underground lava aquifers recharged by rainfall on the Chyulu Hills 50km distant. The springs form two crystal pools inhabited by hippos, Nile crocodiles and abundant tropical fish. An underwater observatory — a unique structure in Kenya — allows visitors to descend below the surface and observe hippos from below the waterline. The effect is utterly surreal: enormous animals drifting in slow motion through gin-clear water, their footfalls sending mushrooms of sand rising from the spring floor.
Shetani Lava Field
The Shetani lava field erupted approximately 200 years ago and covers a vast area of the park's north with a surreal black landscape of aa lava — jagged, impassable and extraordinary. A short walking trail leads into the lava field from the road, offering a close encounter with a landscape that feels like no other in Kenya. From the balloon, the full scale of the lava flow is visible — a dark river of rock frozen mid-surge, surrounded by the red-brown Tsavo plains. The two-kilometre Shetani Caves — formed by a lava tube beneath the flow — can be explored with a torch and a guide.
Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary
Tsavo West's Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary is a 70 km² fenced area protecting one of Kenya's most important black rhino populations. Entry requires a permit and a dedicated KWS ranger escort. The sanctuary's dense bush requires patience and tracking skills — black rhino are territorial, secretive animals — but sightings here, when they come, are unusually close and extended. The Ngulia escarpment rising above the sanctuary creates a dramatic backdrop, and the bird ringing station at the adjacent lodge is one of East Africa's most celebrated ornithological facilities.
Chyulu Hills Hiking
The Chyulu Hills National Park adjacent to Tsavo West's western boundary offers some of Kenya's finest wilderness hiking. Guided walks across the volcanic crater rims and through the montane forest deliver views that encompass Kilimanjaro, Amboseli, and the full sweep of the Tsavo plains to the east. The hills are geologically the youngest mountains in the world at under 500 years old, and their lava cave systems — including the second-longest lava tube cave in the world — are extraordinary for exploration. The Chyulu Hills are most accessible as a day hike from lodges in the Amboseli ecosystem or from Tsavo West's western boundary.

How to Get
There
Tsavo West lies approximately 240km south-east of Nairobi, straddling the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway. It is one of Kenya's most accessible parks.
When to Visit
Best Time to
Visit Tsavo West
Tsavo West's varied topography — from low-lying lava plains to the 2,000m+ Chyulu Hills — creates microclimates and diverse seasonal experiences across the park's different zones.
June – October
The long dry season brings concentrated wildlife to the Tsavo River and Mzima Springs. Vegetation is low and open, making game viewing across all habitats excellent. The best balloon flying conditions — clear skies, cool mornings and no rain. Book in advance for prime lodge dates.
- Best balloon flying conditions
- Wildlife at Mzima Springs concentrated
- Open vegetation, excellent game viewing
- Dry, cool dawn flights
November
November is the most extraordinary month for birding in Tsavo West — the Ngulia Lodge ringing operation at its peak, with up to a million Palaearctic migrants passing through the Ngulia escarpment forest. An unparalleled birding event unique to this location in all of East Africa.
- Peak Palaearctic migration
- Ngulia ringing station active
- Up to 1 million birds recorded
- Unique ornithological event globally
December – May
The rains bring dramatic transformation — the Chyulu Hills turn deep green, the lava fields are fringed with new growth, and the park's waterholes and rivers fill. Wildlife disperses but remains abundant. Fewer visitors, excellent value and the Shetani lava field fringed in new green growth is extraordinary.
- Dramatic landscape greening
- Chyulu Hills at their lushest
- Lowest rates, fewest visitors
- Stunning lava field contrasts
Balloon flights operate year-round subject to safe weather conditions. Final go/no-go decisions are made on the morning of each flight. Full refund or reschedule is provided in the event of a weather cancellation.
