Hot Air Safaris

Meet
Our Pilots

Every balloon flight begins with a decision made in the dark, before dawn, by a highly trained aviator who knows this landscape as intimately as any animal that lives within it. These are the people in whose hands your experience rests.

The Standard We Hold

Commercial Licences.
Annual Examinations. Zero Compromise.

Our pilots hold commercial balloon pilot licences and undergo stringent annual checks by experienced examiners, as required by Kenyan law. Beyond their aviation qualifications, every member of our team brings deep personal knowledge of the wildlife, ecology and Maasai culture of the regions we fly — transforming each flight from a transport experience into an authoritative guided encounter with the landscape below.

Our Standards

Trained, Certified
& Examined Annually

Commercial Pilot Licences

Every pilot on our team holds a Commercial Balloon Pilot Licence issued under Kenyan Civil Aviation Authority regulations — the same standard as any scheduled commercial aviation operation in Kenya.

Annual Examinations

All pilots undergo stringent annual flight examinations conducted by independent, experienced examiners as required by Kenyan law. Renewal is non-negotiable — no licence, no flight.

Safety-First Culture

Our Head of Safety, Captain Mervin DeSouza, oversees a safety management system built on over 25 years of balloon operations across multiple continents. Every pre-flight decision — including the go/no-go call — is made by the pilot, independently, based on conditions on the day.

Deep Local Knowledge

Our pilots know the Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo and Meru ecosystems at an intimate level — the seasonal movements of each wildlife species, the micro-weather patterns of each valley, and the cultural history of the Maasai landscapes below. This knowledge informs every commentary, every position call and every landing decision.

Multi-Destination Qualified

Each pilot is qualified and experienced to fly across our full portfolio of Kenya destinations — Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo East, Tsavo West and Meru — with detailed knowledge of the unique topographic and weather characteristics that each park presents to a balloon pilot.

Ground Crew Excellence

Behind every flight is a dedicated ground crew — trained, experienced professionals who manage the inflation, retrieval, equipment maintenance and breakfast setup that frame your experience on both sides of the flight. Our crew chief lineage traces back to 1991.

Hot Air Safaris

Every Decision
Starts Before Dawn

The go/no-go call is made by your pilot alone, on the morning of the flight, based on conditions in the field. It is the most important decision of your day — and it is made by someone who has made it thousands of times before.
